Autonomous Driving = The car’s “autopilot brain” 🧠
Imagine trying to drive your toy car across the living room but instead of you pushing it, avoiding the dog, and parking it under the couch, the toy does it all by itself, without even a remote controller in your hand. Yeah, pretty awesome. So the car adds a robot brain. (I know it isn't the best playtime experience but bear with me.
What is Autonomous Driving?
Autonomous driving is like having an invisible, super-smart chauffeur sitting in the driver's seat. You set the destination, and the car says: “Got it boss, I’ll take the wheel.” (It's literally Jarvis but grounded and probably a little less talkative)
How it works (super simple)
The car uses its "eyes" (cameras and lasers) → The robot brain scans the road → It calculates what to do → The car steers and brakes for you
Instead of stressing in traffic like a raging unc you’re just nonchalant. (Remember guys, low cortisol always wins)
Here is a glimpse of what the car's laser "eyes" (called LiDAR) actually see to make sure it doesn't bump into anything:
Two types (same goal, different levels of robot)
- Driver Assist (Level 2): Helps you steer and brake, but you still have to watch the road. Basically: "Co-pilot robot bro."
- Full Self-Driving (Level 5): Doesn't even have a steering wheel. You just get in and sleep. Basically: "Sci-fi chauffeur bro like a Nolan film." (No 70mm IMAX required btw)
Most modern cars are adding these features because it’s:
- Safer (The robot never gets sleepy or texts while driving)
- Less stressful (Traffic jams become relaxing)
- Feels like the future (Constantly learning from other cars)
Why it feels different sometimes
- Highway driving: Super smooth, glides perfectly in the lines (cruise mode ON).
- City driving: Extra cautious, scanning for pedestrians and unpredictable stuff (hyper-focus mode ON).
This Week in Petrolhead History : Aug 21, 1897 The Day Mass Production Was Born
Not every piece of “petrolhead history” is about speed and glory. Some days changed manufacturing forever. On 21st August 1897, in Lansing, Michigan A man named Ransom E. Olds founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company.
Most credit Henry Ford for mass production but Olds actually patented the assembly line first.
Output exploded from 425 to 2,500 cars in just a year The result: The birth of the modern stationary automotive assembly line and the famous Oldsmobile Curved Dash.
What went right?
It wasn’t just a new engine. It was something far more structural:
Standardized, interchangeable parts step-by-step sequential assembly flow, Drastic reduction in build times, Making cars accessible to the public, not just the rich. Basically a chain of brilliant process optimizations leading to one massive leap for the industry.
Why this matters: (even for cars today)
This innovation led to massive changes in how humans manufacture complex machines: Automated robotic assembly plants, Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing, Global automotive supply chains, Scalable production systems; And here’s the link to cars: Every single vehicle rolling out of a factory today relies on the DNA of that very first stationary line. Think about Modular vehicle platforms, Gigacasting and Automated chassis mating.
At the end, all I would like to add is that someone rightfully once said, "The greatest inventions aren't always the machines themselves, but the systems built to create them."

I’ve been quiet lately. The emails stopped.
The uncomfortable truth is that every silence has two reasons:
Running out of things to say and Building something worth saying
That second reason is pretty much where I’ve been.
Why the disappearing act? Not because I hit a wall but because I was stepping into a completely different ballgame altogether.
Finished my B.Tech in Automobile Engineering from Manipal University Jaipur and got accepted into the e-PGD program in e-mobility at IIT Bombay. Traded my free time for...well... busier evenings than my B.Tech days but boy has it been worth it.
It’s not burnout. It’s preparation winning over comfort.
The brutal reality I had to make my peace with was that the shift to electric isn’t just swapping a gas tank for a battery pack. It changes everything about how a vehicle breathes, moves, and thinks. This semester, I’m tackling two massive courses:
- EV Styling and Design: Moving past generic skateboards to balance drag coefficients, aerodynamic efficiency, packaging constraints, and pure aesthetic identity.
- EV Grid Integration: The reality of V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid), smart charging architectures, and the brutal question of whether our electrical grids can actually support the future.
These aren't just textbooks. This is the absolute bleeding edge of where our industry is heading and the crossroads where automotive engineering meets industrial design and macro infrastructure.
But here’s the exciting part:
We love to argue about aesthetics vs. functionality, or EV adoption vs. charging realities.
And now, I’m right in the thick of those debates.
- Form vs. Aerodynamics
- Cabin space packaging without an ICE bay
- Bidirectional charging and peak load balancing
- The real-world strain on public transformers
So I didn't just think:
"I'll learn this to pass an exam and get it over with"
I thought:
"I'm bringing this to the world as I once wished to"
And I'm back.
